Could the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) β½ππ be returning to a 2 year tournament?
Reports suggest Decemberβs decision by CAF may be reversed.
Could the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) β½ππ be returning to a biennial (2 year) tournament?
Yes, according to a number of reports today, first announced by journalist Romain Molina who stated that a formal announcement would be made by Confederation Africaine de Football (CAF) in due course.
As a reminder, CAF President Patrice Motsepe announced in December 2025 that the biennial tournament would be moving to quadrennial (4 year) format, stating he had been convinced by the data. This was understandably met with disappointment and frustration across the African football community.
AFCON is the continentβs biggest sporting tournament and also generates the most income for CAF. It has also been mostly biennial since its inception. If true, this news would be welcomed!
The next few days will prove busy for CAF as the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) are due to make their ruling on the winner of the 2025 tournament. This follows Senegalβs πΈπ³ appeal of CAFβs overturning of the Final result, and effectively handing the win to Morocco π²π¦.
At lot is at stake with this outcome, number one being the integrity of African football and the AFCON tournament itself.
More to come!
